Capturing what an owner knows before the business closes

Owners retire and the operating knowledge goes with them, so the business closes rather than passing on. The idea is to record the actual work, in the workshop or the office, learn the exact sequence of actions, and hold the brand afterwards. Profit share first and fees later. The lighter version skips the acquisition entirely and sells the extraction on its own.

The open question. Is tacit operating knowledge transferable out of the person who holds it?

What would kill it

Every version needs somebody in the room. Search funds and private equity are already here and they have the one thing this needs, which is time on the ground.
